AMMPS: Avoidance, Minimization, and other Measures for Protecting Species
In 1973, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was enacted to protect and recover species at risk of extinction. Today, across the United States, there are over 1600 species listed under the ESA under the jurisdiction of the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and/or NOAA Fisheries (NMFS).
As expected, there is a substantial amount of data needed to fully understand the distribution of species and inform discussions around protecting species from potential stressors. AMMPS was developed as a tool to help inform discussions on avoiding and protecting species. Within AMMPS, modules provide ways to explore species attributes, land use and land cover, interactions between potential stressors, such as pesticides, and species, and options for mitigating impacts.
